A simple doughnut recipe from the 1800s.
- 8 oz brown sugar
- 16 oz flour
- 2 tbsp yeast
- 1 cup milk (more if needed for dough consistency)
- 8 oz butter
- 1 lb lard
Get all the ingredients together.
Pound the brown sugar to separate the large chunks.
Sift and combine the flour and brown sugar together in a bowl.
Add the milk in small batches to the mixture to achieve bread-like consistency in the dough.
Once the desired consistency is achieved, add yeast to the mixture.
Wait for the dough to rise for at least an hour.
Once the dough is risen, mix in the butter.
Start heating a large pan on the stove.
Add lard to the pan and start melting it down.
Create balls out of dough, trying to keep them the same size.
Fry the balls for approximately 2-3 minutes or until completely cooked through.
Serve doughnuts garnished with powdered sugar and whipped cream if desired.
